House Zen is a private residence design for an oceanfront site in Las Terrenas, Dominican Republic. The proposal brings together views of the water, existing tropical vegetation and spaces for family life. Site topography and the aim of retaining trees and planting guide the relationship between the house and its surroundings.
CONCEPT
The concept combines organic forms, natural materials and panoramic glazing. Living areas open towards the ocean, while the layout separates shared family spaces from bedrooms and service areas. The design treats the arrival sequence, pool and planted surroundings as parts of the same architectural composition.
DETAILS
Materials: Timber and stone connect the building's palette with its tropical setting. Their textures give the architecture warmth and complement the open views through the glazing.
Views and daylight: Large windows frame the ocean and bring daylight into the living spaces. The relationship between the rooms and the landscape is central to the design.
Family layout: The living room, dining area and kitchen form a connected shared space. A family room and home theatre complement separate children's, guest and principal bedroom areas.
Arrival and pool: A 20-metre suspended pool is proposed above the main entrance and the stair to the upper level. This feature links the arrival experience with the ocean-facing living spaces.
